Workplace Harassment and Violence Against 2SLGBTQIA+ Populations: Microaggressions as a Form of Gender-Based Violence

For those working in the gender-based violence (GBV) sector, understanding the unique challenges faced by 2SLGBTQIA+ populations in the workplace is crucial to providing comprehensive support, advocacy and safety at work. Microaggressions, rooted in assumptions of heterosexuality and binary gender norms, represent a pervasive form of GBV that often goes unaddressed in professional settings. These subtle, often unconscious behaviors-such as misgendering, invasive questions, assumptions about gender roles, outing colleagues, or inappropriate jokes – can have significant psychological and professional impacts on 2SLGBTQIA+ individuals.
Workplaces often mirror, societal structures that privilege heterosexual and cisgender identities, perpetuating harm through exclusionary practices. Examples include language that assumes heterosexuality, forms and policies limited to binary gender categories, and a lack of accommodations for diverse gender identities and expressions. These microaggressions, not only undermine individual well-being, but also contribute to systematic GBV by reinforcing the marginalization and erasure of 2SLGBTQIA+ individuals.
This session equips GBV professionals with the knowledge to address these issues within their organizations.

Speaker
Christine Wildman (they/them) is a queer, critical feminist, activist and academic. Christine is invested in community organizing, working on various initiatives related to creating community, space, visibility, safety, and acceptance for 2SLGBTQIA+ people. Christine co-founded WorQshop: Building Safer Spaces, a non-profit organization that provides education and consultations services to organizations that aim to become more inclusive to 2SLGBTQIA+ populations. They are a critical community-engaged researcher with a PhD in Sociology, specializing in Identities and Social Inclusion. Christine’s research and teaching has focused on 2SLGBTQIA+ rights/needs, experiences of intimate partner violence, and access to services and community in small to medium populations centres, as well as violence against women and gender diverse populations. Christine is also a Research and Knowledge Mobilization specialist for the Neighbours, Friends and Families campaign, which is a provincial IPV prevention campaign, out of the Centre for Research and Education on Violence Against Women and Children.

Pour les personnes qui travaillent dans le secteur de la violence fondée sur le genre (VFG), il est essentiel de comprendre les défis uniques auxquels font face les populations 2ELGBTQIA+ en milieu de travail afin d’offrir un soutien complet, un plaidoyer efficace et un environnement professionnel sécuritaire. Les microagressions, enracinées dans des hypothèses d’hétérosexualité et des normes binaires de genre, constituent une forme omniprésente de VFG qui passe souvent inaperçue dans les milieux professionnels. Ces comportements subtils et souvent inconscients, comme le mégenrage, les questions intrusives, les suppositions sur les rôles de genre, le déplacardage de collègues ou les blagues inappropriées, peuvent avoir d’importantes répercussions psychologiques et professionnelles sur les personnes 2ELGBTQIA+.
Les milieux de travail reflètent souvent des structures sociétales qui privilégient les identités hétérosexuelles et cisgenres, perpétuant le préjudice par des pratiques d’exclusion. On y retrouve, entre autres, un langage qui suppose l’hétérosexualité, des formulaires et des politiques qui se limitent à des catégories binaires de genre, ainsi qu’un manque d’accommodement pour diverses identités et expressions de genre. Non seulement ces microagressions nuisent au bien-être individuel, mais elles renforcent également la marginalisation et l’invisibilisation des personnes 2ELGBTQIA+, contribuant ainsi à la VFG systémique en renforçant la marginalisation et l’effacement des personnes 2ELGBTQIA+.
Cette séance permettra aux professionnel.les de la VFG d’acquérir les connaissances nécessaires pour aborder ces enjeux au sein de leur organisme.

Conférencière
Christine Wildman (iel) est une personne queer, féministe critique, militante et universitaire. Christine s’investit dans l’organisation communautaire et travaille à diverses initiatives liées à la création de communautés, d’espace, de visibilité, de sécurité et d’acceptation pour les personnes 2ELGBTQIA+. Christine a cofondé WorQshop: Building Safer Spaces, un organisme sans but lucratif qui offre des services d’éducation et de consultation à des organismes qui veulent devenir plus inclusifs pour les populations 2ELGBTQIA+. Christine est chercheureuse critique engagé.e dans la communauté, titulaire d’un doctorat en sociologie, avec spécialisation dans les identités et l’inclusion sociale. La recherche et l’enseignement de Christine ont porté sur les droits et les besoins des personnes 2ELGBTQIA+, les expériences de violence entre partenaires intimes (VPI), ainsi que l’accès aux services et à la communauté dans les centres de petites et moyennes populations, de même que la violence faite aux femmes et aux populations de diverses identités de genre. Christine est également spécialiste en recherche et en mobilisation des connaissances pour la campagne provinciale de prévention de la VPI, Voisins, amis et familles, menée par le Centre de recherche et d’éducation sur la violence contre les femmes et les enfants de l’Université Western.
