Navigating trauma-informed embodiment practices with survivors and those supporting survivors of gender-based violence

This Webinar was presented and recorded on July 16, 2024.

In this session, speakers discuss the connection of trauma and the body, and the ways in which somatic/embodiment practices can be integrated into the everyday work of supporting survivors of gender-based violence (GBV). This session also aims to deepen understanding around the systemic and intersectional realities that impact trauma-informed embodiment work.  Speakers will share both innovative and practical ways in which these approaches can be further integrated into the work of supporting survivors of GBV.

Learning Objectives

By participating in this Webinar, participants will better be able to:

  • Shift from body versus mind to an understanding of the “bodymind”

  • Understand trauma from a systemic and intersectional perspective

  • Understand connections between trauma and the body, recognizing shame and trauma including fear, projections, learned helplessness and responses

  • Consider integrating somatic and embodiment practices into the everyday work of supporting ourselves as frontline workers, leaders and survivors
  • Consider tangible strategies for trauma-informed practices both online and offline, including the use of digital education tools in addressing GBV

Speakers

Margeaux-Feldman.pngMargeaux Feldman (they/them) is a multidisciplinary artist who uses creative writing, visual art, and social technologies to promote mental health and disability justice. Margeaux is currently in the MFA in Creative Writing at California Institute of the Arts and prior to this completed a PhD in English Literature and Sexual Diversity Studies at the University of Toronto. They are the author of the book manuscript, Touch Me, I'm Sick: Hysterical Intimacies, forthcoming with Beacon Press as well as ten self-published zines. Margeaux’s essays and book reviews have been published in GUTS MagazineThe Ex-Puritan, and Rabble, amongst others. They run the popular instagram meme account @softcore_trauma. Nicole-Faulknor.pngNicole Brown-Faulknor (Navigating the Underpinnings of Trauma & Violence: An Embodiment Perspective to GBV)Nicole is both Founder & CEO of Wounds 2 Wings Trauma + Psychotherapy Services https://www.wounds2wings.com/ and TEAO Canada (Trauma and Embodiment Association of Ontario) https://www.teaocanada.com/, a Yoga Instructor, Registered Psychotherapist, Child and Youth Counsellor, Trauma Consultant, Trauma Care Expert, Author and Trauma Survivor. Nicole has received two awards for her work at the People's Choice Awards, 2019 https://byblacks.com for  ‘Best Youth and Family Services’ and ‘Best Counsellor. She is also a member of both the College of Registered Psychotherapists in Ontario and the Canadian Association for Psychodynamic Therapy. Nicole has spent a few solid years,  leading into 2018 and onward of research, embodied interactions in communities and corporate knowledge, after spending over 18+ years of professional experience working with historically ignored, vulnerable and oppressed communities, individuals, families and children. These communities suffer from mental health, addictions, systemic poverty and profiling. My intention is to therapeutically improve relationships with programs and services, integrating trust and support within the cracks of our mental health care system.  Nicole continues to bring awareness to the underpinnings of why emotional health is our mental & physical health.

Ce webinaire discutera du lien entre les traumatismes et le corps, ainsi que des façons dont les pratiques somatiques/d’incarnation peuvent être intégrées dans le travail quotidien de soutien aux survivantes de la violence fondée sur le sexe (VFS). Cette séance vise aussi à approfondir la compréhension des réalités systémiques et intersectionnelles qui ont une incidence sur le travail d’incarnation tenant compte des traumatismes. Ce webinaire présentera des moyens innovants et pratiques par lesquels ces approches peuvent être davantage intégrées dans le travail de soutien aux survivantes de la VFS.

Objectifs d'apprentissage

Ce webinaire permet aux participant.e.s de

  • Passer de l’opposition entre le corps et l’esprit à une compréhension du « corps-esprit »

  • Comprendre les traumatismes d’un point de vue systémique et intersectionnel

  • Comprendre les liens entre les traumatismes et le corps, reconnaître la honte et les traumatismes, y compris la peur, les projections, l’impuissance acquise et les réponses

  • Envisager d’intégrer les pratiques somatiques et d’incarnation dans notre travail quotidien d’autosoutien en tant que travailleuses et travailleurs de première ligne, leaders et survivantes
  • Envisager des stratégies concrètes pour les pratiques tenant compte des traumatismes, en ligne et hors ligne, y compris l’utilisation d’outils d’éducation numérique pour lutter contre la VFS

Margeaux-Feldman.pngMargeaux Feldman (iel) est artiste multidisciplinaire qui utilise la création littéraire, l’art visuel et les technologies sociales pour promouvoir la justice en matière de santé mentale et de handicap. Margeaux fait actuellement une maîtrise en beaux-arts en rédaction créative au California Institute of the Arts et, auparavant, elle a obtenu un doctorat en littérature anglaise et en études sur la diversité sexuelle à l’Université de Toronto.
